how to take body measurements correctly

why measurements matter

patterns are built from measurements. even a small mistake can create noticeable fitting problems.

i could give you a standard measurement template, but since every body is different, it’s always better to work with your own numbers. taking the time to measure yourself correctly will make everything that comes next much easier.

what you’ll need

for this step, here’s what you’ll need:

  • a flexible measuring tape
  • a notebook or printed measurement chart
  • optional: someone to help you measure

before you begin

these are a few simple recommendations while taking measurements:

  • stand straight, but relaxed
  • keep the tape parallel to the floor
  • don’t pull the tape too tight

the measurements

these are the measurements we’ll be using most often.

circumferences

these measurements go all the way around the body:

  • chest
  • waist
  • mid hip
  • hip
  • flexed knee
  • ankle
  • short sleeve circumference
  • mid-length sleeve circumference
  • long sleeve circumference
  • neck circumference

front measurements

these are taken from the front of the body:

  • shoulder to waist front
  • shoulder to bust point
  • bust point to bust point
  • hip height
  • skirt length
  • pants length

back measurements

these are taken from the back of the body:

  • shoulder width
  • shoulder to waist back

printable measurement chart

i know that just reading the names of the measurements can feel a little confusing at first. that’s why I created a visual guide with all the measurements mentioned on this page.

feel free to save it or print it if needed :)
